UNIT 306: Level 3 Structured Cabling and Enterprise Networks
DURATION: 2 days including assessments



Following the completion of mandatory Units 301/302, candidates must complete one other Level 3 module to receive the full Level 3 Certificate. Unit 306 qualifies as one of three optional modules which must be completed in combination with unit 301/302 which are offered as a package.

The Unit 306 Structured Cabling and Enterprise Networks module provides attendees with the skills to analyse the equipment, standards and protocols used on data networks.

Cloud-based technologies are now prolific, so there is a requirement for an enhanced knowledge comprehensively covered within this unit. Attendees will be able to apply the knowledge gained from this, and other units, to implement a data network including internal and external infrastructure.

Unit 306: passive optical technology topics included
  • Cable and connector types and their associated specifications
  • Cable categories and classes/ratings of structured communications cabling
  • National and international protocols and standards
  • Relevant building regulations
  • Fire rating/performance including CPR/UKAS classifications
  • Cable components used in data networks i.e. patch panels, access points etc
  • Hardware used in data networks, i.e. cabinets, containment etc
  • Power and data segregation
  • Grounding and bonding, referencing BS EN 50310/BS EN 62305
  • Test equipment to fault find, troubleshoot, and rectify
  • Proprietary cloud-based platforms for data storage/projects
  • Test results, supporting documentation, handover submission and completion of project

The Level 3 Structured Cabling and Enterprise Networks City and Guilds 3668-03: 306 module is aimed at anyone who wishes to progress further than Level 2, such as those entering supervisory, design or project management roles. The Level 3 Certificate in Communications Cabling builds on installation competences and supports candidates moving into more senior roles and provides them with eligibility for an Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Network Infrastructure card.

Gaining the full Level 3 requires the core modules (Unit 301/302) and one of the three offered practical modules; 303 Fibre Optic Cabling, 305 Passive Optical Networks (PON), 306 Structured Cabling and Enterprise Networks.
