Following the completion of mandatory Units 301/302, candidates must complete one other Level 3 module to receive the full Level 3 Certificate. Unit 305 qualifies as one of three optional modules which must be completed in combination with Unit 301/302 which are offered as a package.
The Unit 305 Passive Optical Networks (PON) course give attendees the skills to carry out the evaluation needed for the deployment of passive optical networks, as well as familiarity with terminologies used and technology deployed in passive optical network systems. There is a practical component to this unit, which will cover correct installation practices and testing external cabling to the customer premises. Candidates are assessed by timed assignments.

The Level 3 Passive Optical Networks (PON) City and Guilds 3668 - 03: 305 module is aimed at anyone who wishes to progress further than Level 2, such as those entering supervisory, design or project management roles. The Level 3 Certificate in Communications Cabling builds on installation competences and supports candidates moving into more senior roles and provides them with eligibility for an Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS) Network Infrastructure card.
Gaining the full Level 3 requires the core modules (Unit 301/302) and one of the three offered practical modules; 303 Fibre Optic Cabling, 305 Passive Optical Networks (PON), 306 Structured Cabling and Enterprise Networks.
